Though I’m not new to butter tarts, I started this adventure at the request of a friend of mine at The Sweet Oven in Barrie Ontario. A bit appropriate because according to my friend Barrie is the home of the Canadian butter tart. Though Deepak IS a native to the area and perhaps this is local lore (he is a great guy tho). So, in short, it better be good.

The Sweet Oven offers two basic tart experiences; the less runny or the more runny. For my first review here I chose the latter. Though I hate to start with a banger right off out of the gate based on my previous experiences in several provinces this may have already topped the charts. If anything changes I’ll be sure to come back and note the update the folks we started with a real banger.

The first sensation that gets you is the slight crunch on the top of the filling in the center ... as you bite down the center, it kind of loses out with still a crunch that is left from it's crispy top. The pastry on the sides is just light enough to hold everything together, if you don’t finish it off in a couple bites however, it does become kind of a delicious mess. Honestly this is kind of the great experience of The Sweet Oven butter tarts. The pastry is not thick; it’s just firm enough to keep it all together so not to be overwhelming. You really get the flavor of the light gooey center, the crunch of the top, and bite of the crust with this tart.

This might be the one to beat people. The center has a consistency more akin to honey but with a less pungent sweet taste, finishing in just a couple bites. It really fits the sweet tooth without feeling like you’re eating a small pie. You do have to watch though, that center will go everywhere if you don’t control. Overall amazing combination of crust, bite, gooey center, and crispy top. This was an amazing butter tart.

ALTERNATIVES: I also had the Nutella; a center thats a little thicker but the center was flavorful. A little bit more pungent than your basic butter tart, which is what I would expect from a specialty flavor. Though you cant really beat the consistency and taste of the original, being slightly more dense and flavorful it was a treat to try some of these other flavors.
